Before you come
New to the words as well as the track? The glossary explains the lines, the bike and every race. If you are wondering what the track does for your fitness, that is here. Riders 17 and under have their own free Thursday session.
How certification works
- Take the beginner class. $40, one session. You will ride a fixed-gear track bike on the flat, then the apron, then the banking, with an instructor. Track bikes are available for $5 if you don't have one.
- Ride open sessions. Once certified you can join any open training session on the weekly schedule for $10.
- Race. Club races are run by the velodrome under ATRA rules. Members race for $5.
Track etiquette
- Do not cross the track in cleated shoes. You may slip and fall.
- Do not cross the track while a race is in progress.
- When you do cross the track, look before you cross so you do not get in the way of someone riding or warming up.
- When overtaking another rider, call "STAY." Do not say "rail" or "pole" or anything else that expects them to move out of your way.
- To complete a paceline pull, signal with an elbow and look before moving. Do not pull out of the middle of a paceline; wave the riders around you instead.
- Do not ride carelessly. For your safety and everyone else's, no unexpected moves.
- Foul or abusive language by riders or support personnel will not be tolerated.
- If you are unsure what to do: ask.
During 200 m timings
- We ride in a group behind a leader, above the blue line.
- When it is your turn, call your name to the timer as you pass.
- You then have one lap to build speed for your 200 metre time.
- Make your dive the next time around, at the black 200 metre line in turn two, and go as fast as you can until you cross the finish line.
- When you have finished, go to the apron or the back of the pack. Do not ride anywhere else on the track while other riders are doing their 200s.
