Track rebuild project
Rebuilding the velodrome.
The Encino Velodrome, a cherished hub for local cyclists, is in urgent need of major renovations. Our track, while rich in history, is aging and requires updates to ensure it meets the standards necessary for athletes to train effectively. We have engaged a local company to design and rebuild the velodrome. The project is estimated to take approximately three months, with a total cost of $875,000 to $950,000.
The Encino Velodrome is a historic 250-metre concrete cycle track that has hosted National Championship and Olympic Qualifier races. The rebuild will achieve an improved race surface that retains the essential character of the original 1961 track and restores the failed crown sections in turns one to four.
The work covers fine grading, rebar material and installation, shotcrete straights, banks and turns, flat concrete decks with thickened slabs and edges, metal fabrication including permanent forms atop both turns, and repositioning and rebuilding of the balustrade rails.
A robust shotcrete layer — approximately 580 cubic yards of concrete, reinforced by #3 rebar set and tied on 12-inch centres — will provide sufficient structural strength to eliminate the recurrence of most existing cracks. The new surface will follow the circumference of the original ridable surface, including the failed top sections of the track that have fallen back. The crowns atop each turn will be refabricated via permanent steel forms that attach to the current structure and allow the new surface to extend up to the track's original width through turns one to four. The balustrade fence will be replaced and built into the steel crown forms.
The reinforced shotcrete solution raises the existing track surface about five inches. The inner diameter of the race surface will therefore allow a shorter black line, which may achieve a true 250-metre race line above the côte d'azur. All track markings will be applied in colour-matched, durable latex paint: the côte d'azur, black datum line, sprinters' line, blue stayers' line, 200 m line, two pursuit lines and the finish line.
The new surface will be trowelled smooth to a finish predetermined by the club, using a 23 mm clincher tyre at 100 psi as the guide. Cold joints will be set where necessary and minimised; additional joints to control cracking will be cut with a one-eighth-inch blade.
