Youth & juniors

Free track for riders 17 and under.

Every Thursday evening, 4:00 to 6:30, riders aged 17 and under learn how to ride safely on the velodrome and develop the skills and fitness needed to race. The session is free. Funding is partially provided by the LA84 Foundation.

Before the first session

  1. A parent or legal guardian signs the release of liability. Minors cannot ride without a current one on file. It's here.
  2. Bring a helmet and lots of water. Everything else, the bike and the coaching, is at the track.
  3. Come a few minutes early the first time, so the coaches can set a bike up and talk through the rules before the session starts.

What they learn

How to ride a fixed-gear bike, how to ride the banking, how to ride in a group, and then how to race. Junior riders race on restricted gears, a rule everywhere in the sport that protects growing knees and puts the emphasis on leg speed and skill rather than force. Riders who want more can join the other weekly sessions once certified, and race on Friday nights.
